Our Little Tin Can Project
This past spring (2017) we had stumbled upon our little tin can-a 1960’s Fleetwing. We had lofty goals to have her done and ready for our first road trip this past May, but life happens and she is still sitting in our garage started but feeling a bit neglected. We plan to work on her over the winter and ideally would like to go out this next spring on a small road trip as a test run before we go further with her.
Here is what we have done so far:
- gutted inside
- removed all interior structures
- Purchased new wall materials, foam (sleeping/sitting), flooring
- removed original sink and icebox door (the rest of the icebox had been removed)
- microwave and small fridge obtained
- new tires
- updated frame
Original Sink and Kitchenette area.
Dinette area that was also the sleeping area.
What we plan on doing this winter:
- Insulation applied to walls
- electrical work
- re-install walls, sleeping areas, and kitchenette area
- figure out an awning system
Our current camper that we have is a 29′ bunkhouse travel trailer with one slide-out. We will be cutting back in size tremendously to this little 13′ travel trailer. But our goal is to introduce the kids to nature, get outside, enjoy the world via camping with our little family and doing so on a budget. This little tin can will be towed with our 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan keeping us all comfortable on the long drives that we hope to face and giving us extra storage with the stow and go seats.
Follow our progress on this fun project and adventure! I am looking forward to sharing with all of you about the camping areas we visit, and all the wonderful things that come with the adventure of going much smaller with a family of 4, dogs, bikes, strollers…and can’t forget s’mores!
